Independent Film & Video
Charming New Society is a production team based in
Houston, Tx.
We create our own independent short films & video as well as hired projects and freelance videography.
F/X MakeupWe have spent years honing our craft at special effect makeup. It is a long-running self education that will continue for many years to come. Our first official gig as professional makeup artists was at the haunted attraction Camp Fear in 2007. At this time our makeup work is exclusively for our own films and hired projects.
F/X Makeup
We have spent years honing our craft at special effect makeup. It is a long-running self education that will continue for many years to come. Our first official gig as professional makeup artists was at the haunted attraction Camp Fear in 2007. At this time our makeup work is exclusively for our own films and hired projects.
Independent Film
Our primary goal at Charming New Society has always been to create our own films. At the moment we are working on almost entirely short-length pieces. We were working on a feature in 2006, a fan-film based on the Marvel character Wolverine. The project was canceled in 2007 after nearly a year and a half of arduous pre-production. Since then we have been doing short film projects, including the "Po'Boy, Teenage Hoboy" series. Over the next year we aim to produce several short films and video projects to build our reel. After that we will again attempt an independent feature.
Video Services
Having worked in videography in the past, we have recently started to take on projects-for-hire. This is mainly to supplement our funding of our own projects. Our freelance video services include music videos for musicians, web-commercials and promos, live events, as well as typical videography. Our mantra to those who wish to hire us is that "we are not videographer, but rather filmmakers-for-hire".
See our services page for more details on hiring us for your own projects, events, or occassions.
Our Philosophy
Many videographers you encounter will have the same technical knowledge and may have impressive or superior equipment, but having worked at video firms in the past we can tell you with confidence that where they ultimately differ is in perspective. To a videography firm your project or event is a "job", and they treat it a such. But we consider ourselves filmmakers. This is what we do, day in and day out, because it is what we love. So while we do videography to help pay the bills, the fact that we do our own projects shows we have a true passion for creating video. And anything we shoot for hire is yet another opportunity to hone our craft. This eliminates the "get-it-done-get-paid" attitude and ensures your video's final outcome will be of the the same quality we would demand from our own films.
We're Not "Videographers"... We're Filmmakers For Hire!
Charming New Society is NOT a videography firm. We do not have offices or employees. We are a small team of hard-working individuals that primarily work on our own film projects.
We do freelance video work to:
1) build our reel and audience
2) pay our bills and fund our personal projects
SERVICES
We specialize in creative works such as music videos for bands, sketch web-commercials, video portraits, and short film projects. However, we also do live events and performances, special occasions, sports, promotions, and anything else which you may want filmed.
We shoot in HD with high performance pro & prosumer equipment and editing software.
Why use freelance?
As freelance video artists we feel we can benefit you in terms of both cost and creativity. We approach your projects, occasions, and events as we would any film project of our own. No matter how simple the job, we never "point-and-shoot". Anything we set our mind to tape, we treat as if it were one of our own films. What this means for you is that you will always have us at our most creative and inventive when it comes to how we shoot your video.
PRICING
There are no set "pricing-packages" for our video services. We look at each project on an individual basis. Unlike most video firms we do not charge an hourly base rate. When you contact us about a project we will assess the overall scheme of it, including time and effort. You should provide as much detail as possible about your project and the budget you're working with. We can work within most budgets. No reasonable offer will offend.

Dai Masters is a local magician, specializing in strolling close-up illusions. We will be ongoingly shooting promotional videos of him doing street magic. There are also plans to collaborate his talent and our own for events. More on that soon.
Fetal Knievel
Fetal Knievel is a wacky, absurdist concept about a motorcycle-riding badass who also happens to be an underdeveloped fetus. We're aiming to make this into an episodic web-series, but for right now we're concentrating on developing the pilot short.

Bio
Jack Lawrence has had an interest in film from a young age. He made stop-motion videos and short movies throughout childhood. Into his teens his interest grew, and Jack began self-study into filmmaking and screenwriting that continues today. At 13 he took his first summer workshop in video production. Shortly after he built his first analog editing system, comprising of tape decks, monitors, and mixing boards. He continued his self-education and practice in filmmaking, learning and testing every aspect from directing, cinematography, acting, to FX makeup. Through these years he first began working as a videographer. After highschool Jack enrolled in courses at New York Film Academy and took several more film workshops at various institutes. He still feels he has learned more from 'doing' than from any formal training.
Walter Scott has a background primarily in music. He studied music theory in college and worked for several years as a DJ. Also having had a life-long interest in film he later developed those skills. During this time he began practicing with cameras, studying cinematography, and teaching himself makeup effects. He realized he had a knack for filmmaking and has been thoroughly involved in the filmmaking process since. Walter still continues to work on music for his film work and for his own pleasure.
